INFORMED CONSENT STATEMENT

You are invited to participate in a research study, entitled An investigation of cognitive processes. The purpose of the study is to investigate how people think, act, and make decisions. You will be given a debriefing at the end of the experiment.

All of the experiments will be run on a computer. The experiments will not take more than 55 minutes to complete, and will usually take much less time (you will be warned about how long an experiment will take). The particular instructions for an experiment will be displayed on the computer screen.

There are no known risks associated with the experiments. Society benefits from this research because an understanding of how people think can help us to design classes, instructions, and devices so that they are easier to use and learn how to use. You benefit from this experience because you learn something about how an experiment is designed and conducted, what issues are of interest to psychologists, and what your own cognitive abilities are.

Deception

No deception is used in these studies.

Confidentiality

The information in the study records will be kept confidential. Data will be made available only to persons conducting the study unless you specifically give permission in writing to do otherwise. No reference will made in verbal or written form which could link your name to the study.

If you have questions at any time about the study or the procedures, or you experience adverse effects as a result of this study, you may contact the researcher, Rob Goldstone, at 338 Psychology Building, or 812-855-4853 (rgoldsto@indiana.edu).

Participation

Your participation in this study is voluntary. You may decline to participate. If you decide to participate, you may withdraw from the study at any time. If you withdraw from the study prior to its completion your data will be returned to you or destroyed.
