We distort the dimension values of an object so that they become more like the values typically seen for the object`s category (assimilation), or less like the values seen for contrasting categories (contrast). If an object is categorized into a group, its appearance is assimilated toward the group. If an object is not categorized in the group, then its appearance is distorted away from the group.
